The school day was over
A sense of something disappearing
my father and mother swiftly pacing
late afternoon was dark gray overcast
The optimism in my father's grin
The knowing look on my mother's face
I asked permission to join in on the event
They conceded without blinking
Looking back down the avenue at the school
A huge building a shadow unto itself
Dark wooden planks dark grey roof tiles
None of it familiar
There was no chimney or fire
Though the darkest of the sky's cloud
Seemed to pour off the school roof
Like a deadly gas into the ether
The car door clunked open
I looked into the gutter before entering
to see a stained toothpick
A tiny omen
