The Maritaka squabble on the powerline
The racket echoes off the hard concrete house walls
The bird tilts it's head to the side like a doctor investigating
And makes a slow and careful utterance as it preens its partner
They chatter for many a minute their tones rising and falling
They hobble closer then separate
grappling the line with their small talons
And nodding at each other and the morning
Then the two bold creatures squawk in unison
Drop from the line flick wings and speed over the neighborhood
Who knows to search for fruit, to build a nest or to go on chatting
inseparable they soar cackling on their way
