My nurse at Hawkesbury

 the mountain made my home
the bay bathed close to the land i lived
The insane garden where a local ghost shone
In dusks contempt

Something that lost it's humanity
would wheel itself down the corridor after midnight
Screeching and squealing across the linoleum
It didn't enter my room or haunt me directly

It was the soul of a dead nurse
One that had left the world many decades ago
The scraping of the old wheel chair
Lulled me at once and sent me to slumber

It's predictable routine would repeat
There in old Cherry farm now hawkesbury
Where people with broken minds
would live out their pain

The empty paddock below the window
Where something stood just at the edge of vision
Ushering the nurse out like some desperate parent
Every night they replayed the same short drama

One night she was in my room murmuring and facing the wall
I wanted to tell her I knew how lonely it felt
But she could feel i already knew
Maybe she was there because i was sadder than her
And she was dead
