Eyes for the night

It hides in the long grass
village division with the local forest
Eyes reflect like glass in a changing mirror
Prey almost gone

A kind of hunger it's fond of
for a short time
before terrorized human voices
attempt to scream out "crime"

It can see the whole village
The last tasks of the country folks day
Dusk like game has picked up and run away
Now beast with eyes that were bred to pierce the night, sees

Waits for it's host to reach sound asleep
Then patrols it's lanes for stray dogs and sheep
The jungle no longer provides
The killing intention in the beast, it's art of hiding

It was perched in a tree at sunset
as farmers took what was dear
Now it stares into a family home
Humans unaware

It's tongue touches the night
strange kiss
It's nose senses an uneasy aroma
now the shadows conspire in it's favor

In silence it moves to the clay framed open windowsill
I would sigh, why so much blood, confusion and goodbye in it's kill
Sharp clawed paws scratching out the thatch
IT FALLS ON ITS UNWILLING PREY

I would sigh, why so much noise, shock and drama extinguished flames
The lover of the hunt eternally untamed
Still does the world sit back and remain nature channel beguiled
The sensation of hunger, the regal leopard eternally wild
